Our impact
From idea to impact
The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability powers excellence across all areas of scholarship that, together, are crucial for advancing the long-term prosperity of the planet.
-
Founded by two Stanford postdoctoral scholars and supported by an Innovation Transfer Grant from the TomKat Center, startup Electroflow Technologies converts abundant saltwater brines in the U.S. into a key material needed for batteries.
-
With early support from the TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy, Matías Castillo, MBA/MS ’20, Juan Cristóbal Ruiz-Tagle, and Cristian Bartolomé, MS '19 co-founded Pulsar to help manufacturers to operate smarter with quality data.
-
With support from the TomKat Center’s Graduate Fellowship in Translational Research, PhD student Daniel Neamati is modeling prescribed burns to better manage wildfires.
-
Supported by the Stanford Impact Fellowship (SIF-Eco), master's student Meghan Wood is building a permit-free and renter-friendly solar solution through startup Raya Power.
-
As a recipient of a TomKat Graduate Fellowship for Translational Research, PhD student Lauren Gillespie develops tools for estimating biodiversity in ecosystems.
-
Supported by an early grant from the TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy, David Mackanic, PhD ’20, co-founded Anthro Energy, a startup that innovates safer, longer-lasting, more powerful batteries.
2024 Progress Report
When we launched the school in 2022, we embarked on an ambitious journey to help create a future where humans and nature can thrive in concert and in perpetuity. We knew our efforts to chart a course forward, built from engagement across Stanford and beyond, would require deep understanding and knowledge of Earth, climate, and society, as well as sharing that knowledge through education. Just as important, we knew that we must fashion innovative programs and projects to translate knowledge into globally scalable solutions. All told, to match the magnitude, urgency, and complexity of a sustainable future, we needed to boldly reimagine academia, while anchoring ourselves to the core academic mission of research, education, and innovation.
We are living up to that vision.
Our 2024 Progress Report is filled with examples of discovery, impact, and progress. These stories represent the results of the committed and inspired work done by our faculty, students, postdoctoral scholars, and staff day after day demonstrating our collective progress in fulfilling our strategic vision.
